Your building has asbestos. You need it gone — not just removed, but the whole structure taken down safely and legally. Revlyn handles the entire Section 34 demolition process from hazardous materials assessment through to complete structural teardown and debris recycling.

One contractor. One call. No coordination headaches between an abatement crew and a separate demo company.

What Is a Section 34 Demolition?

Under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code, Section 34 requires that all hazardous materials — asbestos, lead paint, mercury, PCBs, silica — be identified and safely removed before any structure can be mechanically demolished. This isn’t optional. It’s the law, and Alberta OHS enforces it.

A Section 34 demolition means the building contains hazardous materials that can’t simply be stripped out by hand. The structure needs controlled mechanical demolition with hazmat protocols in place — engineered containment, air monitoring, worker protection, and proper disposal of contaminated materials at approved facilities.

Most demolition companies sub-contract the hazmat work. Revlyn doesn’t. We handle assessment, abatement, demolition, and recycling in-house, which means fewer scheduling delays, clearer accountability, and lower total project cost.

Our Asbestos Demolition Process

1. Pre-Demolition Hazardous Materials Assessment

Before anything gets torn down, we conduct a comprehensive hazardous materials survey of the structure. This identifies the type, location, and condition of all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) along with other regulated substances like lead, mercury, and mould. This assessment is required by Alberta OHS before a demolition permit can be issued by the City of Edmonton.

2. Abatement & Safe Removal

Once hazardous materials are identified, our trained abatement crew removes what can be safely taken out by hand under full containment — negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, sealed work zones. All removed materials are bagged, labelled, and transported to approved disposal facilities. We provide full documentation and clearance air testing.

3. Section 34 Mechanical Demolition

For materials that can’t be manually removed — asbestos-containing concrete, drywall embedded in structural elements, contaminated insulation in inaccessible areas — we proceed with controlled mechanical demolition under Section 34 protocols. This means continuous air monitoring, wet suppression to control fibre release, and engineered controls throughout the teardown.

4. Debris Recycling & Disposal

Revlyn is a demolition and recycling company. Non-contaminated materials — concrete, metal, wood — are sorted on-site and diverted from landfill wherever possible. Hazardous waste goes to licensed facilities with full chain-of-custody documentation. You get a clean lot and a complete paper trail.

What We Demolish

We handle Section 34 asbestos demolitions across residential, commercial, and industrial properties in Edmonton and surrounding areas:

  • Pre-1990 houses and garages with asbestos siding, vermiculite insulation, or asbestos-containing drywall mud

  • Commercial buildings with asbestos floor tiles, pipe insulation, or fireproofing

  • Industrial facilities with multiple hazardous materials requiring coordinated removal

  • Infill development lots where an existing structure with hazmat needs to come down before new construction

  • Multi-unit properties and apartment buildings with asbestos in multiple systems

Why Edmonton Developers and Contractors Choose Revlyn

Single-source accountability. Assessment, abatement, demolition, and recycling under one contract. No finger-pointing between three different companies when something slows down.

72-hour OHS notification handled. Alberta OHS requires 72 hours’ notice before any work that may release asbestos fibres. We handle the notification, the paperwork, and the coordination with inspectors.

Edmonton demolition permit experience. We know the City of Edmonton’s commercial and residential demolition permit process, including the hazardous materials documentation requirements. We’ve done this hundreds of times.

Recycling-first approach. We divert as much non-contaminated material as possible from landfill. Concrete gets crushed and reused. Metal gets recycled. You get a cleaner environmental footprint for your project.

Fully insured and WCB compliant. Workers’ Compensation Board coverage, comprehensive general liability, and environmental liability insurance. Your project is protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Asbestos abatement is the removal of asbestos-containing materials from a building that’s staying up — during a renovation, for example. Asbestos demolition is when the entire structure (or a major section) needs to come down and hazardous materials must be managed as part of that demolition. Revlyn specializes in the demolition side: we handle the abatement that’s required before and during structural teardown.

  • Yes. Alberta’s OHS Code requires a hazardous materials assessment before any demolition or renovation that may disturb asbestos. The City of Edmonton also requires this documentation as part of the demolition permit application. We can coordinate the assessment as part of your project scope.

  • It depends on the size of the structure and the extent of hazardous materials. A residential bungalow with vermiculite insulation might take 1–2 weeks from assessment to clean lot. A large commercial building with multiple hazmat types could take several weeks. We provide a detailed timeline with every quote.

  • Cost varies based on building size, type and quantity of hazardous materials, disposal requirements, and site access. Because Revlyn handles assessment, abatement, demolition, and recycling in-house, our total project cost is typically lower than coordinating multiple contractors. Contact us for a site-specific quote.

  • Yes. We handle the full permit application process including hazardous materials documentation, utility disconnection coordination, and any required notifications to Alberta OHS. We’ve worked with the City of Edmonton on hundreds of demolition permits.
